About the authors
CLIFF GUILLIAMS was head chart caller in Kentucky for decades and the author of Final Calls to Absent Friends, a collection of newspaper columns and reminiscences about jockeys, horses, and figures in horse racing.
Guilliams served on the official chart-calling team for the Kentucky Derby for 25 years, working first for the Daily Racing Form and later for Equibase Co. A horse named The Cliff’s Edge was named in his honor by owner Robert LaPenta and trainer Nick Zito.
Guilliams died at age 52 after suffering a seizure at Keeneland.
DARRELL WAYNE LUKAS was an American Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse trainer who won 15 Triple Crown races and 20 Breeders' Cup races, and wrote the foreword to Cliff Guilliams' Final Calls to Absent Friends.
Lukas received four Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Trainer (1985, 1986, 1987, 1994), was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007. Before training horses full time, he earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin and worked as a teacher and basketball coach.
Lukas was born in Antigo, Wisconsin, and died in Louisville, Kentucky, at age 89.
