David W. Irvin

DAVID W. IRVIN was a United States military officer and aviator and the author of two books. His books include Highway to Freedom: The Berlin Airlift and Escape or Evade.

On November 19, 1943, Irvin was shot down over France, captured by the Nazis, and subsequently escaped, making an arduous journey to Sweden before returning to his unit in England. In 1948, he volunteered for the Berlin Airlift, flying 85 missions from Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany.
