Fifteen to twenty percent of dogs are born with a tendency towards introversion and fearfulness, leading to behaviors like uncontrolled submissive urination, fear-aggression, and inability to bond with humans. With understanding and the right training, fearful dogs need not be condemned as bad pets; rather, they can become some of the happiest and most deeply bonded dogs around--the epitome of great pets.

About the author

DEBORAH WOOD is a writer and dog trainer and the author of numerous pet books, including Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion, The Dog Lover’s Guide to Dating and Help for Your Shy Dog: Turning Your Terrified Dog into a Terrific Pet.

Wood was named Newspaper Person of the Year in 2001 by the Dog Writers Association of America. She also served as the pet columnist for The Oregonian and appeared regularly as the pet expert on NPR’s Satellite Sisters.

When she’s not writing, Wood competes in obedience trials with her Papillon dogs and makes animal-assisted therapy visits with one of her dogs to a children’s hospital. These hands-on experiences with dogs inform the practical guidance running through her books.

Deborah lives in the Portland, Oregon area.
