Fred Kaplan

FRED KAPLAN is a national security columnist for Slate, where he writes the "War Stories" column, and the author of four books. His recent books include The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War, 1959: The Year Everything Changed and Daydream Believers: How a Few Grand Ideas Wrecked American Power.

Kaplan co-won a Pulitzer Prize for a special Boston Globe Magazine supplement on the U.S.-Soviet nuclear arms race. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from MIT and served as a foreign and defense policy advisor on Capitol Hill.

When he’s not writing, Kaplan draws on years as a correspondent at the Boston Globe, reporting from Washington, D.C., Moscow, and New York City. That reporting background shapes his deep focus on American foreign and defense policy.

Fred lives in Brooklyn with his wife, NPR journalist Brooke Gladstone.

Fred Kaplan’s books are published by Trade Paper Press, an imprint of Turner Publishing.
