A fascinating look at weather, including a wealth of unusual proverbial and naturalist lore. Makes the vagaries of the weather comprehensible, from the point of view of naturalists, and both modern and ancient meteorologists. Describes several "natural barometers," and explains the basis of some old-time weather lore. Can one predict rain from the behavior of insects, birds, or other animals? Was there a Great Flood? The author addresses these and many other fascinating questions in entertaining, nontechnical language. Incorporates historical information based on records from past centuries to the present.

About the author

GARY JAMES LOCKHART was a chemist, process engineer, and weather hobbyist who spent years conducting meteorological research in major university libraries across the West. He is the author of The Weather Companion: An Album of Meteorological History, Science, and Folklore.

Lockhart graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964 with a degree in general science. He went on to work as a chemist and engineer in the Chicago area and later as a chemist at a pulp mill in Ketchikan, Alaska, before settling in Seattle, Washington.

When not writing, Lockhart pursued his meteorological research alongside professional work in chemistry and engineering. That scientific grounding shaped both The Weather Companion and his Natural Earth series on herbal substances.

Lockhart died on September 19, 2001, in Seattle at the age of 59.
