MARGARET McCORD was the daughter of James McCord, the physician who founded McCord Hospital in Durban, South Africa, where she was born. She is the author of The Calling of Katie Makanya: A Memoir of South Africa.

Growing up, McCord knew Katie Makanya, the Zulu translator and interpreter who worked at her father’s hospital. She later recorded Makanya’s life story from a series of taped interviews, and that account became the basis of her book.
McCord was born on November 7, 1916, in Durban, South Africa, and died on March 29, 2004, in Carlisle, Massachusetts.
Margaret McCord’s books are published by Trade Paper Press, an imprint of Turner Publishing.
