FRIEDRICH MAX MÜLLER was a German-born philologist and Orientalist who spent most of his working life in Britain, where he became the first Professor of Comparative Philology at Oxford and directed the Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume series of English translations of Asian religious writings.
Müller was awarded the Pour le Mérite (civil class) in 1874 and appointed a member of the Privy Council in 1896. He held a doctorate in philology from Leipzig University, awarded in 1843, and was one of the founders of the Western academic field of Indian studies.
A pioneer in Vedic studies, comparative mythology, and comparative religion, Müller provided early English translations of Hindu and Buddhist scriptures, including the Dhammapada. He died in Oxford on October 28, 1900.
Max Muller’s books are published by SkyLight Paths, an imprint of Turner Publishing.
