Mystical and practical wisdom—for daily life.

The least known of the Hasidic masters’ teachings—the hanhagot, or “spiritual practices”—are at the heart of this book. These short lists of instructions were created for their followers, inspirational treasures intended to be carried with you at all times. They were to be read again and again—providing spiritual guidance, centering, and aid in bringing joy and God’s presence into daily life.

Practical, personal, and wise, these brief teachings range from straightforward instructions to visualization exercises, meditations, and mantras. Also included are the hanhagot of two neo-Hasidic thinkers: the modern journalist and mystic Hillel Zeitlin (1871–1942), and the contemporary theologian Arthur Green.

About the author

OR N. ROSE is a rabbi, writer, and educator at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts, and the founding director of its Miller Center for Interreligious Learning & Leadership. His books include My Legs Were Praying: A Biography of Abraham Joshua Heschel, Jewish Mysticism and the Spiritual Life: Classical Texts, Contemporary Reflections, and Righteous Indignation: A Jewish Call for Justice.

Rose studied at Yeshiva University, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Brandeis University, and received private rabbinic ordination from Rabbis Arthur Green and Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. He previously served as Associate Dean of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College.

When not writing, Rose draws on a family tradition rooted in both religious life and literary expression — his father was a rabbi and his mother a poet. Much of his work bridges Jewish spiritual wisdom and contemporary ethical concerns.
