About the author

PATTI STRAND is the founder and president of the National Animal Interest Alliance, a nonprofit animal welfare organization, and the co-author of two books on animal welfare and dog ownership. Her books include The Dalmatian: An Owner’s Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet and The Hijacking of the Humane Movement: Animal Extremism, the first book published in the United States on animal rights extremism.

Strand is a former American Kennel Club board member and a judge licensed for Dalmatians and all three Poodle varieties. Her writing on animal welfare and public policy has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, the Washington Post, and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

When she’s not writing, Strand has bred Dalmatians under the Merry-Go-Round kennel name since the late 1960s. Much of her work examines the intersection of animal welfare, extremism, and public policy.

Patti lives in Portland, Oregon.
