Cooper was ordained by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi in 1993 and studied Kabbalah and Hasidism in the Old City of Jerusalem for over six years during the 1980s. He was initiated into Sufism by Pir Vilayat Khan, practiced Zen Buddhism with Roshi Bernie Glassman, and Tibetan Buddhism with Tsoknyi Rinpoche.
