Russell Bourne

RUSSELL BOURNE was an American historian and editor who wrote approximately a dozen books on American history and transportation. His notable works include Cradle of Violence: How Boston’s Waterfront Mobs Ignited the American Revolution, Gods of War, Gods of Peace and The Red King’s Rebellion: Racial Politics in New England 1675–1678.

Bourne was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He graduated magna cum laude from Williams College in 1950 and worked as an editor at American Heritage Publishing and as associate chief of Book Service at the National Geographic Society.

Before turning to books, Bourne reported for Life magazine, served as a Special Agent in the U.S. Army’s Counter-Intelligence Corps in Berlin during the Korean War, and worked as an assistant to Henry R. Luce at Time-Life Books. Much of his writing drew on that deep engagement with American history.

Russell Bourne’s books are published by Trade Paper Press, an imprint of Turner Publishing.
