Shri Purohit Swami

SHRI PUROHIT SWAMI was a Hindu teacher and monk from Maharashtra, India, and the translator of the Bhagavad Gita. His books include The Ten Principal Upanishads, co-translated with W. B. Yeats, and An Indian Monk.

Purohit held a B.A. in philosophy from Calcutta University, obtained in 1903, and a law degree from Deccan College and Bombay University. Yeats included him in the Oxford Book of Modern Verse 1892–1935.

Born Shankar Gajannan Purohit in Badnera into a wealthy Marathi Brahmin family, Purohit traveled to the West in 1930 to teach the wisdom of Hinduism, becoming a close friend of Yeats in London and strongly influencing Yeats’s outlook on Hindu philosophy and mysticism.
