This is the powerful memoir of Solomon Perel, who survived the Holocaust by hiding his Jewish identity and becoming a member of the Hitler Youth. This book was the basis of Agnieska Hollands's award-winning film, Europa, Europa. Published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, it is an important and controversial contribution to a better understanding of the complexity of life under the Nazis.

About the author

SOLOMON PEREL was a German-born Israeli author and motivational speaker who survived the Holocaust by concealing his identity as a Jewish person, passing as an ethnic German throughout the Second World War. He is the author of Ich war Hitlerjuge Salomon (I Was Hitler Youth Salomon).

Perel’s autobiography was adapted into Europa Europa, the 1990 Golden Globe-winning film.

When not writing, Perel visited schools and toured Europe giving talks about his wartime experiences. Those experiences, including his time masquerading as a Volksdeutscher and serving as a Russian-German interpreter before being enrolled in an elite Hitler Youth school in Brunswick, formed the basis of his work.

Solomon Perel died in Tel Aviv at the age of 97.
