Solomon Schechter

SOLOMON SCHECHTER was a Moldavian-born rabbi, scholar, and educator who discovered over 100,000 ancient manuscript fragments from the Cairo Geniza in 1896, bringing them to Cambridge University. His works include Aspects of Rabbinic Theology and Studies in Judaism.

Schechter was appointed lecturer in Talmudics at Cambridge University in 1890 and later Professor of Hebrew at University College, London, in 1899. In 1902 he became president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, and in 1913 he founded the United Synagogue of America.

Schechter studied at the Rabbinical College in Vienna before pursuing advanced studies in Berlin, grounding the scholarly work that placed him at the centre of Conservative Judaism.

Solomon Schechter’s books are published by Jewish Lights, an imprint of Turner Publishing.
