ABDULLAH YUSUF ALI was an Indian Islamic scholar whose translation The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary, first published in 1934, became one of the most widely used English translations of the Qur'an.

He earned an MA and LL.B. from the University of Cambridge, was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1896, and served as principal of Islamia College in Lahore at the invitation of Sir Muhammad Iqbal.
Born in Surat, Gujarat, in British India in 1872, Ali could recite the entire Qur'an from memory as a child. He died in London in December 1953.
