About the author

ANTHONY SHAFTON is a writer and independent scholar who has been researching and writing on the subject of dreams since the early 1980s. His recent books include Dream-Singers: The African American Way with Dreams and Dream Reader: Contemporary Approaches to the Understanding of Dreams.

Shafton holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Harvard University and a master’s degree in creative writing from Stanford University. He is the author of six books and has published on African American dreams in Dream Time, the magazine of the Association for the Study of Dreams.

For Dream-Singers, Shafton interviewed more than 100 African Americans about their dream lives, research that sits at the center of his work on the African American way with dreams.
