Historic Photos of Virginia
More than 250 years passed from the founding of the first English colony in the New World at Jamestown in Virginia until the beginning of the American Civil War, and nearly a century and a half more has passed since the Civil War ended. As distant as such milestones of history may seem today, Virginians are fortunate to be able to see the physical evidence of great events, people, and places everywhere in the Old Dominion.
Historic Photos of Virginia showcases many of the state’s important places as well as events both great and small, beginning with the Civil War and carrying forward to the momentous changes that took place during and after the Second World War. While historic sites such as Monticello, Hampton Institute, and Arlington National Cemetery are featured, so too are the everyday city streets and rural countryside where Virginians lived and worked. These black-and-white images tell the story of Virginia, its people and places, with a vividness only historic photographs can offer.

About the authors
EMILY J. SALMON is an American historian and editor and co-editor of The Hornbook of Virginia History. Her recent books include Franklin County, Virginia, 1786–1986: A Bicentennial History.
Salmon received the GODORT Award for Notable State Documents from the American Library Association in 1995. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Arts in History from North Carolina State University, and served as a senior editor in the Publications Division of the Library of Virginia.
JOHN S. SALMON is an American historian and educator and the author of The Official Virginia Civil War Battlefield Guide and A Guidebook to Virginia’s Historical Markers.
Salmon received an Excellence Award from the Printing Industry of the Carolinas in 1994. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in American History from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts in American Colonial History from the College of William and Mary, and served as staff historian at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
