About the author

DEBORAH LYNN FRIEDMAN was an American singer-songwriter of religious Jewish music who recorded 22 albums between 1971 and 2010. She is the author of Lullaby.

Following her death, Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion renamed its School of Sacred Music in her honor. Friedman was an early pioneer of gender-sensitive language in Jewish liturgy, and her songs were used in Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Jewish congregations worldwide.

Beyond her recordings, Friedman worked as a performer, song leader, music educator, and cantorial host, drawing on prayers and texts from the Torah, Talmud, and other ancient sources. Her setting of Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, became her most widely recognized work.
