Out of the Desert: A Story of Palestine, Ploesti and Beyond
The daring low level mission to the oil refineries of Ploesti has long been considered as one of the most significant missions of World War Il. The allies were determined to annihilate the very source of the fuel which fed the German war machine.
In Out of the Desert, a distinguished veteran of the 98th Bomb Group, John Blundell, provides not only an insider's point of view on the mission, but also compelling photos of the heroes and hardships faced by America's "Force for Freedom" — the 98th Bomb Group.

About the author
JOHN E. BLUNDELL is a World War II veteran of the 98th Bomb Group, 9th Air Force, and the author of two books. His recent books include Desert Fire: The Untold Story of the Air Mission That Cut Off Hitler’s Oil and Out of the Desert: A Story of Palestine, Ploesti and Beyond.
During the Ploesti oil fields mission in North Africa, Blundell served as chief of the Bomber Photographic Section, responsible for installing photographic equipment in planes to document the effects of refinery attacks on Hitler’s oil supply.
Both books draw on his firsthand experience and include photographs of the 98th Bomb Group, offering a personal account of the air mission he considers critical to the war against the Nazis.
