About the author

DENIS BRIAN was a Welsh journalist, biographer, and playwright who wrote more than 30 books, including biographies of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, and Joseph Pulitzer. His books include Einstein: A Life and The True Gen: An Intimate Portrait of Hemingway by Those Who Knew Him Best.

Brian received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, during which he flew 36 missions. He studied at the University of Southampton, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and Columbia University.

Before emigrating to the United States in 1959, Brian worked as a reporter for the Irish News Service in London’s Fleet Street. His biographical work drew on the same investigative instincts he developed as a journalist.
